‘Into the Mystic’ brings new energy to Johnson Drive in Mission

first_imgEddie Smith, proprietor of Into the Mystic. For Eddie Smith, it’s all about energy, whether it’s the resurgent energy occurring on Johnson Drive or the energy within people he sees as potential customers for his new shop, Into the Mystic.A play on the popular Van Morrison song and merchandise geared towards New Age spirituality, Smith’s decision to open his business at 5727 Johnson Dr. is the culmination of a personal journey. It began when he and his late wife were seeking alternatives to treat her cancer. Their journey took them to Native American ceremonies, including shamans, and Reiki, a treatment where a therapist lays hands on a patient to stimulate their natural healing energy. While his wife eventually died in 2008, their experience with alternative healing stuck with him.“It’s been like pieces of a puzzle put together,” Smith said. “The more I was exposed to other people, I realized I was not alone. A lot of people were doing the same thing.“One of the reasons I started this is because I want to spend the rest of my life doing what I enjoy and helping people.”Smith is true to his ambition. He’s the owner and sole employee of the shop which is open every day of the week, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.His shop is an eclectic array that includes precious stones, minerals, crystals, wands, statues, tapestries, candles, hemp oil, Tibetan prayer flags and Buddhas. There’s even a case of high-end sunglasses, a leftover from his days as an optician. In addition to his products, Smith also brings in practitioners of New Age-oriented services including Aura readings, Tarot readings, Rune readings and dream interpretation. And of course, Reiki.“It’s a human-based shop where people can come and find out what they connect with,” he said. “Maybe other humans, maybe something inside themselves.”Smith also enjoys the new energy of Johnson Drive where many unique businesses have been opening in recent years.“I’m seeing a rebirth in this area and it’s exciting,” Smith said. “The other businesses have been welcoming.”last_img
