first_imgSt Catherine Football Association (SCFA) president candidate, Ricardo Valentine, expects a comfortable victory over his opponent, Elaine Walker-Brown, at the association’s annual general meeting and selection of officers on October 20. Valentine, who is being endorsed by former president Peter Reid, told The Gleaner at the launch of his manifesto that he knows that he has the overwhelming support of the clubs and expects what he describes as an easy win against his highly respected opponent. “I expect to win and win quite easily,” he said. “I have majority support from the clubs. They know me, and know I am the person to lead this parish,” he said. “I am happy she (Walker-Brown) has put herself forward to serve. Our past president (Reid) tried to get her to help. She declined. Now she wants to lead the association. That means she is ready to offer herself, and we have no problem. I wish her the best. “But I hope after the election, the type of communication she is having with the clubs continues and she genuinely tries to help the clubs and that it’s not about getting a seat or position. But I have no problem with her. She is someone I speak with. I respect her and what she has done in football even though our parish has not benefited a lot from it.” SUCCESSION PLAN Valentine said that under Reid, the SCFA made strides and he intends to move the association into the next phase, which is why it is on a succession plan. “A lot of us are from the incumbent, so we have done the job,” he said. “The things we highlighted did not come by chance. There are plans we want to develop and build on. There are things we are going to do a bit differently as there is always going to be a change in focus areas when you have a new administration. So we certainly will go into areas we have not gone before, but these are plans we would have had within the association for 10 years.” Valentine says the SCFA would become the top parish association in the near future. “We are not very far from KSAFA (Kingston and St Andrew Football Association), and in another year or two, we will be the best in Jamaica. We respect our neighbours, KSAFA, but we feel our teams will start to outperform them in the next three years, and that is how confident we are about moving football,” he said. Valentine’s slate includes Roy Simpson, first vice-president; Craig Richards, second vice-president; Julius Thompson, treasurer; Norman Blair, general secretary; Laurence Garriques, assistant secretary treasurer; Stafford Chang, Marcia Pinnock, and Ainsley Sharpe (council members). [email protected] Valentine’s manifesto n Amendment of the SCFA constitution to limit presidencies to a maximum of two terms. n Reduce number of votes to clubs from two to one. n Play a greater role in assisting clubs to understand international transfer market, reaping benefits of solidarity payments for player development. n Revive women’s football competition, with the addition of another division. n Improve the physical, managerial infrastructure of the clubs with more workshops, seminars, and courses. n Include more clubs in Lincoln ‘Happy’ Sutherland Knock Out Competition.last_img read more

first_img17-Jul586226 Click to enlargeby Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Positive Kansas COVID-19 cases continue to skyrocket in Sumner County. On Monday, the number of cases rose to 72, up 10 from 62 from tests taken on Friday. This report was written before the Wednesday numbers were released by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.Sumner County Health Officer Laura Rettig on the SCHD Facebook page (see here) said the number of positive cases is even higher at 76 with four additional cases still being under investigation not counted in the KDHE total.Sumner Newscow is crunching the numbers even further and including trends using data from the KDHE site. People can find these statistical and comparison figures information here. So how are things in Sumner County really doing here as far as the spread of COVID-19 is concerned compared to our neighboring counties? Not very well, if you must ask.TRENDSIf you are going on raw numbers on positive cases only, the trend is abysmal in Sumner County. Never has there been more active COVID-19 cases in Sumner County than right now. SCHD is reporting there are 38 current active cases, which breaks a record from the influx of active cases of 36 on July 13.Worse, Sumner County tied the record for its biggest spike over a three-day period. KDHE updates its COVID-19 case map on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 12:30 p.m. Sumner County went from 62 to 76 during a three-day period from July 17 to July 20, for an 18.4 percent increase.Between July 15 to July 17, Sumner County saw an increase of 14 cases as well, from 48 to 62. That was a 20.5 percent increase. The graph below is the number of KDHE cases, the number of Sumner Health Department cases and active cases using figures from both the KDHE site and the SHD Facebook page. As you could tell, July has been a terrible month for containing the virus. In one month’s time, Sumner County went from 10 COVID-19 positive cases on June 22 to 72 on Monday for a 720 percent increase. 13-May552 19-Jun991 Sumner County confirmed COVID 19 Cases Cowley11820515.7 1-Jun881 22-May662 15-Jul494825 13-Jul474836 Close Forgot password? The goal back in March was to flatten the curve, no where did anyone say everyone could avoid getting this. This virus is going to spread and until there is herd immunity it will continue to spread. Do we want to push it back to the winter months when everyone is inside? If you have a compromised immune system avoid as much as possible otherwise we need to live our lives. Hypothetically, if scientists found that covid-19 (with or without symptoms) causes sterility, how many of those, of child bearing age, do you think would start being more careful with social distancing and wearing a mask? Any comments? Report Reply 2 replies · active 3 weeks ago +13 Vote up Vote down Monica · 3 weeks ago No one wants to believe it is in their community. Belle Plaine people say it is in Caldwell. Caldwell people say it is in Conway. Conway people say it is in Belle Plaine. Until the Health Department decides to stop making people rely on rumors and speculation by releasing what areas are actually being effected, I think it will continue to rise at a rapid pace. They don’t have to give exact location. Most zip codes in our area cover much larger areas than just one town. Report Reply 0 replies · active 3 weeks ago +21 Vote up Vote down Jeff McGuire · 3 weeks ago Tracy, Was the test of 72 people a random sampling of the community, or were they people that were tested because they were sick? That makes a HUGE difference. If 10 out of 72 people chosen at random have it, that is a big deal. If only 10 out of 72 people that were sick, have it, it is quite a different story. Which is it? It very much affects the urgency of the situation, and the legitimacy of the crisis. Report Reply 4 replies · active 3 weeks ago 0 Vote up Vote down blythe · 3 weeks ago as it stands, the accuracy of available tests is pretty poor… 40% result in a false negative. 4 out of 10 people who are tested will get a negative test result even though they’re infected. as far as i’m aware, false positives aren’t an issue at all. it has to do with the viral load. so, when it comes to nasal swab testing yes means yes and no means maybe. here’s where i plug antibody testing again, the red cross is testing all blood donations for antibodies and that’s a far more accurate test at 98.8% if i’m remembering right. i think i saw a sign posted telling folks about koc having another blood drive. can anyone verify? For those of you who can’t understand what’s going on let me explain it. If you don’t wear a mask and do not wash your hands as much as possible this is your fault plain and simple. If you do not care about others karma has a way of paying us all back in the end. I mean the very most simple minds should understand. Hell even Trump Is finally getting on board. Wear your mask!!!!! Report Reply 4 replies · active 3 weeks ago +17 Vote up Vote down GrannyD · 3 weeks ago First, I am of the age that I wear a mask when around people I do not know in public. Not if I am with family and close friends. Second: if masks are actually the answer why are they releasing prisoners in places rather that just make them wear one? Third, I know of at least 2 people in Wellington that were sent home after 2 days in a covid unit in the hospital, so obviously for some people it is not as dangerous. Fourth; if they keep trying to shut everything down, we won’t need the virus to do us in. When you can’t work, have no income how are we going to pay property taxes, get tags, pay insurance, etc. We cannot hide at home forever. This is again true. When making comparisons any statistician will tell you that it all depends on the survey’s sample size and relatable data. So it is impossible to adequately see where COVID 19 is clustering on a county-by-county basis because the number of tests per population varies from county-to-county.Nevertheless, going with the available data, Sumner County is still not doing well. Sumner has one of the lowest testing rates.Sumner County’s testing rates is at 39.5 per 1,000 population, as opposed 79.1 for Sedgwick County and 84.2 for Harvey County. Kingman County has a lower testing rate at 39.7 per 1,000.Rettig has told Sumner County Commissioners in meetings past that this is due to the distribution of tests in urban areas as well the number of clinics that are administering tests.HOSPITALIZATIONS AND DEATH RATESThere are no hospitalization rates per county on the KDHE site. For the state of Kansas, according to the site’s figures, there are 1,497 hospitalizations, 439 ICU admissions, 162 Mechanical ventilation patients, with 1,016 discharged patients.Currently, there has been 307 death in Kansas. In Sumner County, there has been one confirmed death and one unconfirmed death.Follow us on Facebook.Follow us on Twitter. 3-Jun881 27-May773 17-Jun991 10-Jun991 8-Jun991 11-May441 5-Jun880 15-Apr331 Harper63751.6 Harvey11728894 2-Apr222 18-May663 15-Jun991 6-Jul17175 22-Jun10101 20-May662 24-Jun10101 10-Jul323220 13-Jun991 Reno16337624.3 29-May882 26-Mar111 COVID-19 caseload timeline graph for Sumner County from March 26 to July 20. (Click to enlarge). The chart (designed by Christy Bales) shows just how sharply the COVID-19 cases has risen just in the last week.———CASE AND TESTING RATESMany have pointed out that the reason that the COVID-19 cases have risen is due to the increased number of tests being administered.  This is true. But the key to the statistics is the percentage of positive cases compared to the total cases of people getting tested. And when you make comparisons with its neighboring counties, Sumner County is the worst. As the illustration above states, there have been 901 patients tested in Sumner County since Monday, and 72 people have confirmed positive cases, meaning that 8 percent of those being tested are positive for COVID-19. This percentage is up from 7.2 percent in just three days. Sumner County is now ahead of Sedgwick County that has 3,135 positive cases over 40,844 administered for a 7.7 percent positive rate. But the situation is worse for Sumner County when comparing it to the neighboring counties in the south-central Kansas region with a similar population base. The following are the confirmed cases, the patients tested, and the percentage of those being tested. first_imgThe Government Analyst Food and Drug Department (GA-FDD) has issued a Consumer Advisory against the use of DOST Patent Barley following discoveries of the product being adulterated. The product from Canada which was packed exclusively for a local distributor was flagged by the GA-FDD after it was found to be contaminated with wheaten flour.Analysis conducted by the Food Chemistry laboratory of the GA-FDD determined the product to be adulterated and this was after weeks of meticulous investigation and collaboration among Inspectors and Analytical Scientific Officers.DOST Patent BarleyThe investigation was initiated as a result of concerns raised and complaints lodged at the monthly National Food Safety and Control Committee meeting. The Department has since visited the premises of the distributor, Geetanjali Rai at Canal Number One, West Bank Demerara, where on both occasions; the Inspectors were unable to gain access to the premises to continue their investigation. According to the GA-FDD advisory, Rai is now in violation of the Laws of Guyana, firstly the Food and Drug Act Chapter 34:03, Section 25, Part 5, which states that “Any person who sells an article of food that is adulterated is guilty of an offence”. Also, Rai is faced with denied access to a premise to which the Act applies in contravention to the Laws of Guyana Food and Drug Act Chapter 34:03 Part VI, Section 21, “Powers of Inspectors”.Consumers are therefore advised not to purchase this particular brand of Patent Barley given the reports of contamination by the GA-FDD. Furthermore, the Department said it has widened the target to analyse similar products such as those that are also being imported from intra and extra regional countries. In addition, Environmental Health Officers within the regions will also be targeted as investigations on the other brands are to be submitted to the Department for analysis. The Department said it will continue to utilise the resources that are to their disposal to facilitate trade and most importantly to protect consumers against falsified and/or substandard food, drug, cosmetics and medical devices.last_img read more
